Updates for Summer - July 2025

Good morning Welby Way families,

I hope you are all having a lovely summer and enjoying time as a family.   I look forward to seeing everyone back soon as we are about to start a positive and productive school year together with so many accomplishments to come

Here are some updates for the start of the school year:

Beginning of the School Year Paperwork - The office will accept the Return to School Packet starting Monday, July 28th .  All required documents can be found on the Welby Way website at https://welbywayces.lausd.org/ under "Back to Central" on the top left corner or a paper packet can be picked up in the office.   The office is currently open from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday, for paperwork pickup and drop off.

After School Child Care Programs – On July 28th Monday, morning applications for our new After School Day Care PEAK Adventures  (TK – 1st at a fee), KYDS (TK – 5th grade no fee) and YS (2nd – 5th no fee) applications are available in the office on a first come first serve basis according to space.  Please be sure to submit your application early to ensure your child has a spot in one of the after school programs.

Welcome Back Family Social - Wednesday, August 13th will be our “Welcome Back Family” event.  The day will follow accordingly and I hope to see you there.

Wednesday, August 13, 2025 will be our Back to School Social...

  • 8:15 am – TK/Kindergarten Orientation in the auditorium
  • 9:00 am – Magnet/New Student Orientation in the auditorium
  • 10:00 – 11:00 am – Meet Greet Event where students meet their new teacher

Thursday, August 14, 2025 – First Day of Instruction with school starting promptly at 8:01 am

To receive your child's classroom assignment and have the opportunity to possibly meet the teacher, families must submit the completed “Return to School” paperwork, including a signup sheet, on or before this day.

**POWW will have food, Welby spirit wear for sale, and opportunities for you to donate to the Annual Giving Fund to help support the many enrichment programs for our students.

School Supply Lists - To best prepare your child for the start of the school year, grade-level supply lists and procedures are provided on our Welby Way website per grade level. 5th-grade families' supply list will be a little different this school year.  A different list will be provided by the teacher this school year, and students will need to wait to find out who their teacher is for specific supplies.

Attendance Counts:  I want to remind everyone of the importance of daily attendance. In the classroom is where it is at, and your child needs to be there to learn.   Students with more than 7 absences per grading period and more than 15 days in a school year are considered chronically absent.  Please be sure to review the attached school calendar so you can plan vacations during breaks and not during the school year.  I also encourage you to make appointments in the afternoon to avoid the loss of instruction.

Cell Phone/Apple Watch Policy:  Welby Way will continue to follow the district's policy of no cell phones and no Apple Watches for all students while on campus.  This includes before and after school.  Students must have their watches in school mode and only use them as a watch, and cell phones must be off while on campus.  This includes any of our after-school programs.   Phones and Apple Watches will be taken if a student is seen using them on campus and must be picked up by a parent from Mrs. DaCorsi.  Thank you for your support with this.

District Outside Lunch Procedures: Welby Way continues to follow the district policy, this school year, the office will no longer be accepting late lunch drop off in the office past 9:30 am.  Parents can drop off a late lunch (no outside fast food will be accepted).  The cafeteria serves free snacks at recess and lunch to all students at no charge.  If a student forgets their lunch, all students are able to eat lunch from the cafeteria.

Discipline Policy:  In August, I will be reviewing the school-wide Welby Way Discipline Policy and behavior expectations with everyone to review with your child prior to the first day of school.  This will also be presented to all students during a school-wide assembly within the first week of school.

School Volunteers - An online application must be filled out to begin the process for the 2025 -26 school year.   You can access this online at  volunteerapp.lausd.net. Everyone, even if previously processed last year or the year before, must complete a new application each school year.   All parents walking onto campus to volunteer, attend a school-sponsored event, or attend a field trip must be processed for this school year.  Also, please know that non-LAUSD/Welby Way and younger siblings are not permitted to attend classroom parties and classroom events throughout the school year.

We are encouraging all parents who intend to come on campus at any point during the new school year to get processed early in the year. Processing can take 30+ days, so getting processed with the intent to go on a field trip a week later will not be an option.  Volunteering is also at the discretion of your child's teacher. You should coordinate with your teacher and or your room parent in the fall to find out what is needed and plan accordingly. Unless you have prearranged to be on campus for a classroom activity or some other prescheduled event for your child's class, you will not be allowed on campus to volunteer unless processed.   If you have other students at other schools in LAUSD, you must be processed at each school site.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to Laura Klein - Community Representative, [email protected]

I hope you all have a wonderful remainder of the summer.  I truly look forward to seeing you on Wednesday, August 13th for the Welcome Back to School event and then on the first day of school – Thursday, August 14th.   Be well and enjoy the remainder of your summer.

Your Welby Way Principal,

Mrs. DaCorsi
